My memorial sculpture is meant to be used as a shrine for contemplating life's mysteries. It’s important that we search for our own understanding of life and death.
“Why is there anything, and what will become of it all?”
The stone symbolizes the material world which all matter is bound to, it is shaped like an altar, presenting a form with embryonic or shell-like anatomy, frozen like a fossil.
I have based this shape on the golden spiral, this can be drawn from the Fibonacci sequence, which is a fractal pattern that is often found in nature.
This spiraling in both directions symbolizes time and motion.
Following the spiral, the shell is released from matter, forming a pillar of energy that’s turning into a sphere. A perfect sphere is the form with the least surface area for a given volume. It is only what’s necessary and it looks the same from all directions. It symbolizes the idea of Truth.
The roundest things in the universe are black holes, and they might eventually swallow everything, causing absolute entropy, meaning the end of time...
But that's just a theory!
“We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.”
- T. S. Eliot
